Inspire. Engage. Educate. Connect.

That’s the inviting slogan of Impact Hub – want to know more? Well we have a hub right here in South Africa, and it’s worth a look if you like the sound of these calls to action.

I checked it out today: the first Impact Hub in Africa, located in trendy Braamfontein, Joburg.

Impact Hub Joburg combines a relaxed and friendly vibe with the stimulating dynamic atmosphere of an innovation lab. Set above the bustle on the corner of De Beer and Smit it offers an appealing package of office conveniences combined with on-tap networking opportunities.

This exciting initiative started in London in 2005 and has since grown to a global reach of 63 hubs across 5 continents to-date. Impact Hub describes itself as:

“a social enterprise community centre… offering a unique ecosystem of resources, inspiration, and collaboration opportunities to grow the positive impact of your work.”

More than 10,000 members have joined the movement and are now tapped into this dynamic global network. 6 new hubs are planned across Africa this year in an exciting initiative called Africa Seed Program.

Impact Hub Joburg Founder and MD Lesley greeted us personally and Thina made sure that we had a full introduction to the facilities on offer, and the space and setting. Portable desks make for a flexible arrangement, and all of the most important office provisions are on-tap: wifi and printing in a light and comfortable setting complete with kitchen, unisex bathroom, and a sofa corner. Fridays are bring and share days, when members are encouraged to chat over a shared lunch with a topic offered for an open discussion.

The members board introduces the other hubbers that you may find there and there is a lively programme of events that members stay tapped into, with discounts offered. Following a busy 2014 Impact Hub Joburg has big plans, including events centred on the ecosystem approach and possibly even a TEDx event in the pipeline.

I’m sold – hope to meet you there sometime!
